're with us today. and let's get started. first up, we just can't call it the petraeus scandal anymore. today, the u.s. general in charge of allied troops in afghanistan, the top commander john allen is himself the subject of a pentagon investigation of allegedly inappropriate communications with jill kelley. yes, that jill kelley, we're talking about the same tampa housewife whom david petraeus' then mistress paula broadwell apparently saw as rival. a whole new chapter in a saga that since last friday has been one bombshell after another. and so far, all of them have something to do with kelley. she's a volunteer military liaison at the air force base, home of the u.s. central command in tampa, florida. kelley complained to the fbi last spring when paula broadwell was having an affair with petraeus allegedly harassed her with jealous e-mails. petraeus admitted the affair with broadwell but denies any elicit contact with kelley. so does general allen who was scheduled for a senate confirmation hearing this very week to become nato's supreme allied commander. today that's on hold, but he will

-585-3880. republicans -- 202-585-3881. independence -- 202-585-3882. joining us to talk, the lame- duck congress and the fiscal cliff is nancy cliff, from the national journal. thank you for being here. what is at stake during a lame- duck session? guest: the biggest hunk of things at stake are tax changes. those are individual tax rates, tax breaks for businesses at stake. the alternative minimum tax that could hit more middle income families. and then these mandated spending cuts that the budget control act put in place, those are called the sequester. those would have the federal government spending across a bunch of different things like health care spending, biomedical research, education. and the other half of that would hit defense. host: the rest of the world is waking up to it. the front page of usa today says -- we are facing a real cliff hanger. take a store with the fiscal cliff is. guest: it is all these different things, a lot of consumers face. one thing i thought was right about that usa today story is that it lays out how it will affect consumers. and about 90% of all americans

"starting point" begins right now. >> look at me i'm whistling our theme song this morning. you're watching "starting point." the scandal, and it's spreading, is now engulfing two four-star generals. there are some new details about the woman who is at the center of it all. her name is jill kelley. she is described as a tammpy socialite. she first reported she's anonymous harassing e-mails to an fbi agent friend, and that ended up triggering an investigation. those e-mails eventually turned out to be sent by paula broadwell. that would be david petraeus' biographer. and eventually turned out his mistress, as well. we mentioned it was a web, didn't i? and it is. the affair exposed general petraeus and he was forced to resign as the cia director. well, now the general john allen, who is the top u.s. commander in afghanistan, is being investigated for trading alleged quote flirtatious e-mails with ms. kelley over the last couple of years. we're hearing fr
prodded. the bottom line on this is the president used every opportunity he could to say that there is an ongoing investigation and deferred this topic to the fbi and the department of defenses inspector generals. those are the two areas the doj and d.o.g. is ongoing. this is the first time the president has been asked about these issues. but as more details come out, i'm certain it won't be the last. >> certainly won't be the last. jessica, thanks very much. new information coming in on the entire petraeus investigation. but right now let's go to the angry political fight that's unfolding between the president and republican senators john mccain and lindsay graham. it began to escalate earlier this morning when the senators vowed to stand in the way of the president if -- if he goes ahead and nominates the united nations ambassador susan rice to replace hillary clinton secretary of state. mccain and graham are scathing of rice's early remarks about the deadly attack on the u.s. diplomats in benghazi, libya. >> this is about the role she played around four dead americans
